What is NORMAL?

street 09 april 006I was reading my sisters Blog this morning and she mentioned the fact that people are unusual. Actually she was trying to figure them out and all I thought about was unusual. It hit a funny note in me because of the conversation I had while fixing breakfast for our homeless friends.

When I got to the office Missy was telling me about a phone call she just had. Without mentioning this persons name it was a “normal” phone call. Full of confusion and mystery. He’s actually like a little boy and it is very difficult to follow what he’s trying to say. But we do believe that we understood and He understood so that closed that particular topic for now. Oh believe me he’ll call back and we’ll be on a new adventure………………. He’s a homeless man and went to Nebraska to visit a brother he hadn’t seen in 22 years. Trying to convince him to stay the 10 days he planned has been a battle. I think he’s afraid we’ll go away before he gets back.  People?

Missy then said… you think that’s something, listen to this message that was left on the phone. I’m like OK I’m game. She started prepping me by reminding me about the movie we went to see. The “Soloist”. I said OK. She said he’s on the phone. Dezi called from California and wants us to get him back to Georgia. There are people after him. He gave us all these contact people to call. Some are even government officials. He has white relatives and black relatives to call. Actually he wants us to call for him. We’re not even sure what we’re suppose to tell them or ask them.

I simply shake my head. I did see the Soloist and for anyone that needs a good idea what we do here, go see it. Dezi and soooo many others could have been the stars in the movie. They wouldn’t even have to act. I would love to do a documentary of what we do here. I told the ladies in the kitchen after listening to this call from Dezi. Well I made a statement. “Maybe they are the normal ones. And, we’re crazy for thinking that we are!”

What is really normal. People are only people. However we judge normal from our own list of rules. If we don’t think anyone  should ever part their hair on the left then that’s NOT Normal!  I love my job. I deal with some of the most unusually unique individuals anyone could ever want to meet and somehow have excepted the fact that “to me”, they are just normal.

Like the couple on this bridge. I say they’re insane………. a train could come. To them, hey they do it all the time. This is normal!

  1. Normal? Oh boy…I don’t know that anyone or anything is normal. What’s normal for one person is really strange to another. I hate fish. Does that make me “not normal” because many other people LOVE fish? I don’t go to movies, ever. Is that not normal? Should people be expected to do what others think they should because that’s “normal” to them? I think it’s kind of like judging people-you can’t do it. You can offer advice, make suggestions, but at the end of the day, that person simply has to choose for him or herself. Often, people tell me I “should” do this or that, thinking it’s good for me. Is it? Jaye, you deal with “unusual”, not what’s normal or what isn’t. When every day is a challenge, it gives you a different perspective on things…

  2. I laughed when I read your comment. I “think” I understand what you were saying. It does get complicated when we try to put our perspective on certain subjects doesn’t it. I totally agree that if we aren’t careful we begin to judge instead of accepting the fact that people just are different then ourselves. Unusual would be a good word for some that I work with. On the other hand many are very normal yet they dress, smell and live much differently then I do. At that point one could say they aren’t normal yet I know without a doubt they are. As you well know that in Africa you can find people looking and smelling AND living very much like some of those that I know here in good old USA. The ones you’ll find in this blog. We say that’s “normal” because it’s Africa. Where’s our level or scale; if you will, that we base our “judgements” on? I’m with you, Thank God we’re not all alike. How boring!
