2010 January

What is that saying about this time of year? Ahh yes, “Out with the old and in with the new.”

Pictured here are just a few of the new faces that has blessed us the past month. Those that haven’t stopped by to visit lately probably wouldn’t even recognize most of them.

What is even more wonderful…over half that come into breakfast are in the “shower” program and have been very faithful attending services as well as mens prayer, “Life Recovery Class”, and cleaning the church on Friday nights. The men help me serve coffee, clean tables, vacuum and re set the tables for next days breakfast.

This morning I went to grab a bag of trash and Jonathan yelled over at Del and told him to get it out of my hand. They are fantastic guys.  All young, all wild in some ways but have taken to me like son’s. I don’t say this because of how much they have pitched in to help I say this because they truly are the new loves of my life. Most aren’t even out of their 20’s and already are homeless.

Out with the old…I really hated to see 09 go. For 4 years we have had so much fun trying to help so many hold onto hope again. Oh it has not always been easy. We’ve argued and yelled at one another. We’ve laughed and we cried. We’ve played jokes on each other and realized that somewhere over the 4 years we actually became a “family”. Three years of intense work to FINALLY see fruit of watering and planting into the souls of hurt, confused lives. The 4th year was rewarding.

Joe, Tony, Mike, Jim all went to re-hab and are no longer on the streets. Donnie went home again to his brothers after Tim died. Randy went back to driving tractor trailers and Ed, Mary, Robert, Thom, Sonny are now living in their own places. Dale is still dreaming of being in a band at “50” but at least he’s still dreaming. Joe Joe has adjusted to his stroke and seems content being in the Nursing Home. He still misses the streets but I don’t think he misses the cold, heat and rain. Bud has snuck across the Mexican border and has a goal to bring people to Christ. (You just have to know Bud) He is off drugs and says he will never come back. Go Bud Go! Tonight! We got “Shaky” Roy into re-hab. Pray the man stays! This is a big step for him and he is so afraid. I located him this afternoon by listening to my police scanner. Long story but I was able to get my hands on him. Tonight he’s safe. Tony Boy left Christmas day sober (2 months) and headed back to his home town with the help of a friend. His heart condition I wonder if I will ever see him again. He told me before he left that he knew God was answering his prayers. I will miss him so much. He seemed to fill in my emptiness after Boone died.

We did lose many the past few years to death. Jeff, Calvin, Jack W., Russell, Bobby R., Julian, Gary, Johnny and my dear dear friend, Tim Boone. I believe my heart will ach a very long time for My Tim. I don’t think I would ever be ready to say goodbye to him.

Homer and Don still stay in their camp. Greg still likes the river bank.

The new men… they are everywhere out there. Old houses are a favorite. Cass who is mentally challenged seems to be taken care of by Tiffany, Fred, Bobby, and Del. Bubba lost his apartment this year and now sleeps where ever. Tony likes to think he’s not homeless but never seems to have a place to sleep regularly. Earl is still more times in jail than out. When he is out he has a camp he stays in by himself. Larry and Louis camp together and it seems to work for them.

Out with the old and in with the new. When I think about it nothing really has changed. There is no old or new. Just a job unfinished and I refuse to quit! The new camps in the other area of town are in horrific conditions. The men and Sue…are starving for God. I need a Van to work out of. So much to do.

Pray for WVM, please pray like never before. I need strength to keep going sometimes. Not spiritually speaking…physically. I want it all folks! I want the ones that nobody can see. Happy New Year!

  1. Thanks for sharing the year with us. Your success in the past four years is amazing, given what you have to work with. You take so little and turn it into hope and recovery for so many. I’m proud of you and the work you do. I know you miss Tim, but one day another will take a place in your heart…and you’ll miss Tim a little less. I’m so happy we had the chance to meet so many of your guys when we did. A wonderful ministry and a wonderful person helping those who have no one.

  2. It is wonderful to see that God has used you to bring his word to so many starving people. Its so encouraging to see you doing this. It also helps me and my ability to relate to others what you do for the ones left behind by someone or somthing. I have much more understanding for the people on the street wanting a few cents for a drink Went the other day to McDonalds and the majority of the people in there were street people. Keeping to themselves but still trying to be friendly. It just was fine, we sat down and ate with them. If it wasn’t for you my friend I would have never done that.
I am no better than them, I have different circumstances and its part of Gods plan for you to continue his ministry.
Best of luck this year and know we pray for you always.
